La Petite Tortue ou Vanesse de l'ortie ( Aglais urticae )

            Il n'existe pas de dimorphisme sexuel chez ce papillon : mâles et femelles ont une taille équivalente (de 40 à 55 mm d'envergure ).
Le dessus des ailes est caractérisé par une couleur dominante orangée et, sur le bord postérieur externe, des formes en demi-cercles bleus, entourés de noir, formant un feston. La partie des ailes proche du corps présente une zone brun terne. Le bord antérieur des ailes antérieures est orné de trois taches d'un brun presque noir, rectangulaires. Celle du centre est généralement plus marquée et bordée de part et d'autre d'une zone orangée très pâle, plus claire que la couleur de l'aile, d'une teinte proche du jaune d'or. La plus externe est bordée vers l'extérieur non pas de jaune d'or, mais de blanc. Trois autres taches brun-noir, dont la taille et le contour diffèrent selon le spécimen, ornent le centre de l'aile antérieure.
Le corps est brun foncé et poilu. Les yeux sont également foncés. Les antennes sont finement striées de blanc et leur extrémité est ornée d'un point blanc. Les ailes sont garnies de deux petites excroissances pointues : la plus petite se trouve près du bord antérieur des ailes antérieures, l'autre, en arrière du papillon, sur la bordure postérieure des ailes postérieures.
Le dessous des ailes est terne, orné d'un motif discret qui évoque la couleur d'une écorce ou de feuilles mortes, ce qui aide le papillon à rester camouflé lorsqu'il hiberne .

There is no sexual dimorphism in this butterfly: males and females have an equivalent size (from 40 to 55 mm wingspan).
The upper side of the wings is characterized by a dominant orange color and, on the outer posterior edge, blue semicircular shapes, surrounded by black, forming a festoon. The part of the wings close to the body has a dull brown area. The anterior edge of the fore wings is decorated with three spots of a brown almost black, rectangular. That of the center is generally more marked and bordered on both sides of a very pale orange zone, lighter than the color of the wing, of a hue close to the golden yellow. The outermost is lined outward not of golden yellow, but of white. Three other black-brown spots, the size and contour of which differ according to the specimen, adorn the center of the anterior wing.
The body is dark brown and hairy. The eyes are also dark. The antennae are finely streaked with white and their extremities are decorated with a white point. The wings are furnished with two small pointed growths: the smallest is near the anterior edge of the fore wings, the other behind the butterfly on the posterior border of the hind wings.
The underside of the wings is dull, with a discreet pattern that evokes the color of bark or dead leaves, which helps the butterfly to remain camouflaged when hibernating.
