The Mer de Glace gondola - a photo on Flickriver

            In 1890, the Mer de Glace (Ice sea) was at the arrival station of the Montenvers little train, built at that time, at an altitude of 1913 m (6276 ft)!

Nowadays, it has changed a lot. You now have to take a gondola that goes down from the train arrival station for 200 m (656 ft). This gondola, initially opened in 1984, was replaced in February 2024. It provides access to the glacier's ice cave, the last vestige of the glacier remaining at the bottom of the valley.

To access the famous ice cave, you have to go downn about 600 steps at the bottom of the gondola. Exhausting for what very little there is to see, especially when you climb back , in the tourist crowd and under the full summer sun!

La télécabine de la Mer de Glace 

En 1890, la Mer de Glace était au niveau de la station d’arrivée du petit train du Montenvers, construite à cette époque, à 1913 m d'altitude ! 

De nos jours, cela a bien changé. Il faut maintenant emprunter une télécabine qui descend de la station d’arrivée du train sur 200 m. Cette télécabine, ouverte initialement en 1984, a été remplacée en février 2024.  Elle permet d’accéder à la  grotte de glace du glacier, le dernier vestige du glacier restant tout au fond de la vallée.

Pour accéder à la fameuse grotte de glace, il faut descendre  environ 600 marches à l'arrivée en bas de la télécabine. Épuisant pour le peu à voir, surtout à la remontée, dans la foule touristique et en plein soleil de l'été !
