Flamingos on the lake - a photo on Flickriver

            We would not expect to find these birds at such altitudes: we are here at about 4550 m ( 14763 ft) altitude, in front of Laguna Q'ara.

The Andean flamingo is a local species found in highland lakes, usually above 3500 m (11483ft).  It frequents only lakes whose bottom is made of soft sediments.
It filters the water with its beak, in order to feed on the fine particles found there. Its beak is very specialized and equipped with a filtering structure like all flamingos.
It feeds mainly on diatoms, algae of the genus Surinella. He takes the food in the water, just above the bottom sediments.
It breeds on islands or islets along the banks or in the middle of these lakes.

Le lac aux flamants

On ne s'attendrait pas à trouver ces oiseaux à de pareilles altitudes : on est ici à environ 4550 d'altitude, devant la laguna Q'ara. 

Le flamant des Andes est une espèce locale que l'on trouve dans des lacs d'altitude, habituellement au dessus de 3500 m . Il ne fréquente que des lacs dont le fond est fait de sédiments tendres.
Il filtre l’eau avec son bec, afin de se nourrir des fines particules qui s’y trouvent.  Son bec est très spécialisé et équipé s’une structure filtrante comme tous les flamants.
Il se nourrit surtout de diatomées, des algues du genre Surinella. Il prend la nourriture dans l’eau, juste au-dessus des sédiments du fond.
Il se reproduit sur des iles ou des ilots le long des rives ou au milieu de ces lacs.
