Betteke and Hans Hennus hiking towards Mt. Futatabi, Kobe, ca. 1939

            Betteke Hennus' father worked for Java-China-Japan Line, internationally known as Royal Interocean Lines, in Kobe, Japan. Some 1,000 foreigners lived in Kobe, a busy port, with Shanghai nearby across the sea. 

Visiting Betteke Hennus was a wonderful experience, going through the family photo albums and scrapbooks. She spent her early childhood in Kobe, which was a pleasant place to live. The photo shows Betteke and her father hiking towards Mt. Futatabi, a beautiful natural area just outside Kobe. 

After the start of WWII in Europe, in 1939, Japan's efforts towards "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere", meant a more hostile atmosphere towards foreigners in Japan and the family had to leave Kobe in 1941. 

The family went to Shanghai, where Java-China Japan Lijn had an office where Hans Hennus could work. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, the international concessions in Shanghai were occupied by the Japanese, except for the French Concession. In October 1942 some three hundred foreigners were made prisoner of war and were kept in Haiphong Road camp, including Betteke's father. 

Betteke, her little brother Michiel and mother Nel Hennus were interned in Chapei Civil Assembly Centre, with some one hundred other Dutch nationals, in March 1943. Her mother experienced more difficult circumstances than other families, with her husband being prisoner in another camp. The family was allowed to be reunited once a year, for ten minutes. 

Just before the end of the war, Hans Hennus and the other prisoners at Haiphong Road Camp feared for their lives, when they were moved from Shanghai to a place near Bejing. The family was reunited after the Japanese surrender, 15 August 1945 and returned to the Netherlands, months later.
