Portrait Klimanek children, Germany, Wasserkuppe airfield, 1936

Today, 31 January 2021, is the day the Holocaust is commemorated in the Netherlands. The news this morning had an impressive item about a Jewish couple, both having survived the war hiding from the Nazis as children. "For me, the war started after coming out of hiding, when I found out my mother was not my biological mother, who had died in a concentration camp."

Most of the world was shocked when the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933. The 1936 Olympics gave the world a chance to see how Jesse Owens proved Hitler's racial ideas wrong. After the 1938 Kristallnacht, when Jewish people and property were attacked, it was no longer possible to doubt Hitler's true intentions.

In 1936, the Klimanek family, living in Shanghai, stayed in Germany for a holiday (and to visit the Olympics?). It was possibly combined with a family visit as Philip Harding Klimanek originated from what is now the Czech Republic.

This photo combines the portraits of Reginald and Sylvia Klimanek, an airplane with the Nazi swastika symbol, the aircrew under the wing and a group of children (Hitler Youth?) at the right. A few years later, airplanes like this were used in WW2. Philip Harding Klimanek sent his family back to the United Kingdom before the war started. His son Reginald Harding Klimanek became a pilot for the RAF. During a mission in Norway, his airplane was shot down and he died, in 1945, at the age of twenty one. After WWII, Philip Harding Klimanek was a broken man, having lost his only brother Paul in WWI and having lost his only son Reggie in WWII. He himself was taken prisoner of war by the Japanese in Hong Kong in 1941, when he was in the city as a volunteer in the food conservation, to prepare for the Japanese approaching.

His grandson wrote to me: "He was beaten up on capture and needed medical treatment. He was in and out of Stanley camp until the Japanese surrender in 1945. As he was of Austro-Hungarian descent after the war his nationality was hard to determine as his papers and all his possessions had been lost, his health was very poor as a result of how he had been treated during the war. Eventually he managed to get a temporary Czechoslovakian passport in 1948 issued in Nanking China. After a short period in the UK looking for work he returned to the Holland-China Trading Company and was traveling between Shanghai and Hongkong. He retired in Hongkong and returned to England 31st Dec 1950."
