Phil Beekmeijer waived off by friends and family, Amsterdam Central Station, 1940

Phil Beekmeijer (1917-2009) was one of Charles Gesner van der Voort's (1916-1991) friends in Shanghai who also worked at Holland-China Trading Company. After the outbreak of WWII in the Netherlands, he joined Dutch forces in the UK, Princess Irene Brigade. He was billeted in Wales for practice, at Portmadogh. Between January and August 1944 he was in Sri Lanka (Ceylon at the time) for jungle training, intended to participate in missions to Sumatra. Upon return in the UK, in September 1944 he participated in Operation Market Garden as a commando. Taken prisoner of war, he managed to escape during the infamous bombardment of Dresden. Phil Beekmeijer was awarded with the Dutch Bronze Cross and the Dutch War Memorial Cross, for his actions during the Battle of Arnhem. After WWII, he became an Amsterdam resident.

Phil Beekmeijer's wax statue with original uniform and other items could be found at Eye-witness WWII Museum in Beek, Limburg, The Netherlands. It is now permanently closed.

On the museum's website, an item on Phil Beekmeijer can be found (translation Pieter Lommerse):
"On 22 March 1942, 48 Dutch military began a heavy commando training in Scotland; 25 of them completed it. One of these first Dutch commandos was Phil Beekmeijer, who's uniform is exhibited in War museum Eyewitness."

Phil Beekmeijer started working for Holland-China Trading Company in Shanghai in 1940. To get there, he first took a train from Amsterdam to Genoa and than an ocean liner from Genoa to Shanghai. A transfer of address form, sent to the Netherlands Consulate General in Shanghai, shows that he took the Conte Biancamano on 26 January 1940, from Genoa. These ocean liners took about a month to reach Shanghai.
