            Charles Gesner van der Voort (1916-1991) was part of a group of Dutch bachelors in pre-war Shanghai. 

Fellow bachelor Frikkie Wiersum (1916-1997) had spent part of his childhood in Yokohama, as his father Kees Wiersum and uncle Menno Wiersum had lived and worked here. In 1937, Frikkie Wiersum started his working life at Java-China-Japan Lijn, first in Jakarta (Batavia), then Shanghai and finally Xiamen (Amoy). There he was captured by the Japanese. In an exchange organised by the Red Cross, he was released, together with his father Kees Wiersum and sent to England on Swedish exchange ship GRIPSHOLM. In England, Frikkie joined Dutch forces and served in the RAF as a pilot. His uncle Menno Wiersum remained in Japan, with his Japanese wife. After WWII, Frikkie Wiersum returned to Shanghai to continue to work for Java-China-Japan Lijn and became director at VNS (Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschappij, a cooperation of several Dutch shipping companies, including JCJL), which merged into NSU (Nederlandsche Scheepvaart Unie) and later into Nedlloyd.

Use of names in Shanghai
In the Dutch community in Shanghai, ca. 1900-1950, it was common to call eachother by the last name or an abbreviation thereof. Charles Gesner van der Voort became 'Ges', Dorone van den Brandeler was named 'Brandy', Mr. Riem was 'Riemy' and Frits Wiersum was known as 'Frikkie' or 'Fricky'.
