Flickriver

            This statue shows Bacchus (the Roman god of wine and revelry) in the company of Pan, a half-man, half-goat protector of shepherds and flocks. Bacchus and members of his entourage were among the most popular deities represented in elite Roman homes. They were often part of the decoration of dining rooms and lavish tableware due to their connections with convivial drinking and dining. Pan's broader associations with fertility, sex, and the bounty of nature made him a suitable subject for the feasting and merriment of Roman banquets. Note that Pan is also holding a syrinx - aka 'Pan pipes' - in his left hand.
