Herm of an auriga (charioteer) - a photo on Flickriver

            One of several sculptures which were discovered in 1889 during the construction of the Trastevere Rail Station. Some structures were discovered in the area, located on the eastern slopes of Monteverde Hill, called Horti  in Roman times, which clearly appeared to be part of a sanctuary sacred to Hercules. In a niche (aedicula) excavated in the tufa rock there were two statues of Hercules, a mensa, two altars with the inscription "Imperio Herculi Sacru L. Domitius Permissus fecit"  and other objects.

In the adjacent area seven white marble busts were found set on colored marble pillars (herms): according to their clothes, e.g. the straps of leather crisscrossing their chests, the men represented by these portraits are identifiable as wealthy charioteers, who consecrated their portraits to Herakles to thank the god for their victories. Known to the Greeks as Herakles, the hero gained glory for having completed physical trials. The Romans considered him to be the protector of commerce, sacred springs, and victories in sport competitions.

Due to this last aspect, these wealthy charioteers wanted to dedicate their own portraits (hermae) in the sacellum Herculis, as a way of giving thanks for their victories; the portraits date back to the period between the Giulio-Claudian and the Hadrianic age (1st-2nd century CE).

This particular portrait features a hairstyle popular during the reign of the emperor Trajan (98-117 CE). There’s possible traces of its original pigments - the hair and part of his outfit seem to have yellow staining.
