Crested Tit

            Armed with my new 150-600mm lens I headed off to the RSPB's Abernethy wildlife reserve at Loch Garten near Aviemore which is part of what is left of the  great Caledonian Forest. This trip was a first on two fronts... first with the new lens and first trip out with the intention of trying to photograph birds. 

The reserve is more famous for it's Osprey's but at this time of the year they have migrated South to Spain or North Africa. I guess id hoped to shoot red squirrels or a woodpecker... but they proved somewhat elusive. What I did find quite close to the car park and drawn in by a wee old lady feeding them sunflower seeds and peanuts was a right mix of smaller birds. Before that day I would not have known what they where... but my wife who is an avid bird watcher kept me right. This crested tit was definitely the rarest of the group for which there was also coal tits, blue tits, chaffinch and we are fairly sure a greenfinch. The grouping are clearly quite used to the attention and feed from people visiting often. The coal tits where eating from the old woman's hand and soon my own and my wife's! It was nice to photograph them in what was still a wild setting however. I think the birds made my first venture overly easy and when I go other places the shots will be a lot harder to come by... but hey ho... I enjoyed the experience none the less!
