The focal plane (area of stuff in focus) is very sharp (so a very shallow depth of field), so it's going to take a lot of moving around of the lens (and yourself!) to get a good result.

I haven't worked out the metrics of shooting with this yet - I've been able to have selective DOF on objects that are close (less than 1m away; see image above) and images that are a considerable distance away (~300m or so - see: www.flickr.com/photos/captin_nod/3096715687/).

Practice a lot before you go out and shoot, preferably indoors. Holding the lens away from the camera will introduce a lot of dirt and dust into the camera body, which is not good for it. Also, I'd avoid doing this in bad weather conditions (e.g. high humidity/rain) for the same reasons.
