Step 1: equipment & preparation - a photo on Flickriver

            You'll need an SLR (in my case, the 450D) and a prime lens (the 50mm f1.8), both pictured here. Results will vary as other bodies have different sensor sizes. Bigger sensors will probably yield better (but more heavily vignetted) results.

Set up your camera for your shoot in full manual mode - meter, select as low an f-stop as possible (in this case, f1.8), and select an appropriate shutter speed. 

Autofocus will be disabled (no power to the lens!) so turn that off - you're going to have to focus manually here. In all the shots I've done so far, I've set the focus all the way past infinity (clockwise if the front of the lens is looking at you).
