Tokyo 2019 - a photo on Flickriver

Tokyo 2019

            I thought for the last photo of this series I would give a little insight into what made this little spot in Tokyo special to me. 

First, street photographers are documentarians. This set represents what was happening in the Summer of 2019 in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. The scenery, the people, the clothing, hair styles, all will change over time. A year and a half later the changes are already evident. The frog bus has been relocated. In its place is a modern glass and wood visitor center. There are fewer people, almost no tourists, and the vast majority of people wear masks. The changes will continue until time no longer exists.

What attracted this place to me was the sheer volume of people that went through this small area. In that mass of humanity were people with fashion, people having fun with friends, those in a hurry, and tourists doing touristy things. One might think that this place is good for photographers who want to harvest the low hanging fruit but I strongly disagree with that. 

There are many good spots to position oneself in this area. It should be obvious that I like to be right by the old train car. I like to use the train as a non distracting background to bring my subjects into prominence. This really only works in black and white due to the frogginess of the train’s color. 

The area in front of the train funnels the people into a narrow lane that allows a photographer get close and takes photos from the front. There is always a crowd around to help you blend in. You can take quite a lot of photos in a day and quality ones at that. I had trouble with my camera sensor overheating and you can see more noise in my images than there would normally be.

So, now that things have changed would I go back and stand in the same spot? Not just yes, but Hell Yes! That glass background is going to be a problem but I can just put my back to it and it won’t be a problem. I will probably move a little more next time. I will also be a little more selective next time. I see no need to change my camera or lens. I am pleased with how they performed.

Since the vaccine and international travel should be up and going by the Summer I have told my wife’s family in South Korea that I would be there some time next October. I’ll be able to run down to Tokyo in time for Halloween and try to spend at least a week pushing the shutter button over and over and over. 

So, this will probably be my last photo until some events start happening around Houston. I want to play around with a Go Pro and see if I can add it to my photography kit when I travel. I am currently trying to clean out the hard drive on my MacBook Pro so that I can process some movie files in Premiere Pro. I don’t own Premiere Pro yet but I have watched a few videos on it. According to some people that I meet that qualifies me as an expert. I believe that nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone have fun, post lots of photos, and document what is going on in your location, your time, your existence. Other than the images that you take, that day will no longer exist when tomorrow comes.
