MOUNGOAT 0066

            Mountain Goat, Rocky Mountain Goat, Oreamnos americanus, 1.2-1.8 m. / 3.93-5.9 ft.  ENDEMIC to western North America.  Not a true goat, rather a "goat-antelope" in the BOVIDAE Family.  Alpine and sub-Alpine and found in open areas above timberline, with meadows for foraging and steep rocky cliffs or talus slopes.  We watched this animal move down off the cliffs to lie down in the shade on the hottest day of the year in Montana.
