Bristol Scout - David Bremner pilot [Explored #2]

            The Bristol Scout was a successful design from early in WW1. This aircraft is flown by David Bremner who, together with his brother, built this replica in honour of his grandfather who flew Scout no. 1264 during the conflict (and survived!). The aircraft contains a few components of the 1913 original. Seen here at Old Warden aerodrome near Bedford, England. Of interest are the French style 'cockade' markings, which were hastily copied by the British after it was found that Union Flags (or are they Union Jacks on an aircraft?) were too easily mistaken for the black crosses applied to German aircraft and drew ground fire from friendly trenches. Later, the red and blue colours were transposed; the fin markings on RAF aircraft now always have the red panel forwards on both sides.
