The riverside at East Looe, Cornwall

            When I first came to Looe with my parents in the mid-1950s it was a major shark-fishing centre, and the sharks would be hung up on the quayside. Now it is forbidden to kill sharks and any that are caught have to be returned to the sea. Looe still retains a fishing industry and its boats go out and return the same day, making the fish the freshest it is possible to buy. 

Looe, on the coast of south-east Cornwall, was once two separate towns sitting either side of the Looe River. East Looe is the larger of the two and has a beautiful little sandy beach, while the beach at West Looe comprises a large rock shelf. At high tide this is covered by the sea while at low tide it reveals numerous rock pools. Both East and West Looe have many traditional fishermen's cottages dating back several hundred years. The yellow boat on the right of the picture is one of several small ferries that will take visitors across the river for the princely sum of 50p.
