The mouth of the River Fowey, Cornwall

            The River Fowey enters the sea through a narrow channel between the headland at Polruan, from where this was taken, and the coast at Readymoney Cove, seen in the centre. This is the only beach that the riverside town of Fowey has. The outskirts of the town are on the right. There is a vast deep water harbour out of shot beyond this headland and in medieval times a huge chain would be drawn across the entrance to prevent enemy ships attacking the town. To the left of the beach at Readymoney Cove we can see St Catherine's Castle, a small artillery fort that was built by Henry VIII to help defend the harbour. This saw intermittent service over the years and in WWII two large guns were installed there.
