The White Bear, Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire

            Shipston-on-Stour in South Warwickshire is one of the prettiest little English market towns that I know, and we called in just before the travel restrictions were in place.  

The name of the town, which is on the northern edge of the Cotswolds, derives from being known in ancient times as 'Sheep-wash-Town'. Shipston was for a long time an important sheep market town and after the demand for local wool began to diminish the town continued to flourish thanks to the opening in 1836 of a branch line from the horse-powered tramway that linked Stratford with Moreton-in-Marsh. The line became a modern railway in 1889. The town was also an important coaching town and many of the inns from the Georgian era survive in the area of the High Street (pictured).

The White Bear, in the centre of the picture, is Grade II-listed and is traditional coaching inn dating from the late 1700s with possible earlier origins. This is just one of many listed buildings in this part of the town, including the cream-painted building on the left with the blue window frames. This was originally a house dating from the same period. It subsequently became the Midland Bank, but this branch was closed.
