The River Plym at Dewerstone Wood, Dartmoor

            This is one of my favourite places on Dartmoor, perhaps because it is so readily accessible with a small car park just a few dozen yards away from here. On this side of the River Plym is Dewerstone Wood. Owned by the National Trust, it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and important for its landscape and wildlife as well as for its archaeology and industrial heritage. Within this area were  granite quarries, a mine, brickworks and china clay workings.

The River Plym's source is a Plym Head on Dartmoor, some 1,480 feet above sea level. It then flows south-west towards the Dewerstone Wood where it meets the River Meavy, just a few dozen yards downriver from here. From there it flows south through Plymbridge Woods and into Plymouth Sound on the east side of Plymouth, a total of some 20 miles.
