Elizabethan Water Garden, Lyveden, Northants

            When we are at home in Northamptonshire one of our favourite places for an outing is the Elizabethan Water Garden at Lyveden, near Oundle. This dates from the late 16th century and was constructed for Sir Thomas Tresham. It was never fully completed, like the adjacent Lyveden New Bield, as he eventually ran out of money. He was a recusant Catholic politician and refused to attend Protestant church services, for which he was regularly fined. His son was associated with the Gunpowder Plot and died in the Tower of London, though from natural causes.  

Lyveden New Bield and the Elizabethan Water Gardens belong to the National Trust.
