Three Steps Waterfalls (Kalkadoon Country, North West Queensland)

            One of the most famous Australian nations, the Kalkadoon, once ruled the Emu Foot Province of which the greater Mount Isa region is the heartland. A proud fierce hill tribe with tall physiques, the Kalkadoons are respected as skilled artisans, craftsmen, and warriors.

There was great hostility between the early settlers and the Kalkadoon people, and after twenty years of guerilla-like fighting, the conflict came to a head in 1884 with a massacre at Battle Mountain. The Kalkadoon's ability to maintain a foothold again the settlers and the Queensland Native Mounted Police (QNMP) for so long can be attributed to their skilled warfare and intimate knowledge of ranges, valleys, and gorges that comprise the rough terrain of their homeland. 

In 1884, Kalkadoon's topped their natural fortress, known as Battle Mountain, found on West Leichhardt Station, faced off in a battle to the end against the combined ranks of the QNMP troopers and settlers gathering below. Like no other recorded frontier conflict, this battle was an organised and open battle war and whilst the guns of the military troopers and settlers prevailed that day it is the courage, defiance, and resilience of the Kalkadoon people that history remembers.

Kalkadoon people were almost decimated by the ravages of colonialisation; war, disease, dispossession, yet their fighting spirit prevailed in their descendants who today are a proud and vibrant part of a diverse Mount Isa community. 

Kalkadoon people have maintained a strong connection with their land, culture, history, and heritage and it is with the same reverence and respect we afford our Anzac soldiers that we remember the fallen warriors of Battle Mountain.
