Dungeness monochrome - a photo on Flickriver

Dungeness is one of the strangest and most distinctive landscapes in Britain. The largest area of natural shingle in Europe, it resembles the American mid-west with overhead powerlines and odd single-storey timber buildings littered around the landscape in a haphazard 'Gold Rush' kind of way.

But instead of rusting Cadillacs and Dodges the walker instead comes across derelict fishing boats and abandoned fishermen's sheds. In places small railway tracks or tramways once helped the locals move boats or boxes of fish to the roadside while unusual brick ovens can be found beside the road. These ovens were once used to boil the fishing nets in preservative.

It is not an easy place for walkers as I found out when - despite having two sticks - I fell over several times. In places it is like walking on banks of marbles. The best way is to find a trackway or walk from patch of grass to patch of grass as the low vegetation has bound some of the shingle together into firmer areas.

Iconic film-maker Derek Jarman lived here at Prospect Cottage and I can easily see why he chose it. The light and the view are stunning in almost any weather condition.
