Smoky Mountain Morning - a photo on Flickriver

All during my trip through Tennessee, which concluded with a stay in Gatlinburg and two days driving through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park I wondered. What is this "smoke"? Will I see it? Will I be able to photograph it? What makes this National Park the most popular? Will it be too crowded? Will it be a marvel to behold, or will it be similar to other National Parks or mountainous regions I've visited?

Well, it is definitely "smoky." I'd describe the landscape as "heaven on earth". Clouds on the Ground. And a sort of "purple haze" around you. And like all of Tennessee (in early summer anyway) the green all around you is just overwhelming.

The sky was filled as well with smoky cloudscapes when I drove through Cade's Cove on the last full day of my trip. This shot was taken on a short walk alongside the path to the John Oliver Place, the first historical home on the loop.

The mountains are rolling and low, but seemingly endless. The Tennessee landscape I'd been driving through from the Mississippi River to the east was mostly flat, so the change in terrain is really distinctive.
