Nashville's famous Grand Ole Opry radio show is the longest running radio broadcast in U.S. history. It began in 1925 on WSM radio and moved here to the Ryman Auditorium in 1943, lasting at this address till 1974, when it moved again to Opryland east of Nashville.

The Ryman was originally the Union Gospel Tabernacle church, built in 1892 by industrialist Thomas Ryman, after he was converted to the Christian faith by revivalist Samuel Porter Jones. Architect Hugh Cathcart Thompson designed the building.

Although it remained a church for most of it's early years, it was leased out to promoters for secular concerts and assemblies in order to pay off debts.

The first sold out event consisted of speeches by Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan in 1913. Even before hosting the Grand Ole Opry, the venue established the cultural scene in Nashville.
