Those Are the Breaks - a photo on Flickriver

This is a composite image (three individual photos stitched together in Photoshop). However, unlike my "artistic" composites, where I create "impossible landscapes" I simply wanted to convey what the breaking wave looks like as it thunders toward the shore, and my field of vision wasn't wide enough in the original set of shots. Also I added a sky from the next day in the same place, when the waves weren't as magnificent.

It might be interesting to note the the two figures are actually the same guy! I was standing in one place, shooting shutter priority (to freeze the waves) at the "high+" speed setting. A wave curls before it breaks, so by stitching both of the images together, this is what the total wave looked like, as it was breaking on the shore, from left to right, but it really is the same section shot seconds apart.

When I photographed the waves, the sky was devoid of dramatic clouds. As stated, I was at the same place the next day, and the clouds here are from that shoot, but the waves weren't as dramatic.

Hence, a totally fake photo to give the impression that it's just a shot of a wave breaking close to the sandy Waimea Bay beach!

I might add that except for movies and photos, I've never seen waves as large as the ones I saw at Waimea last week seemingly come out of nowhere to break right near the shore! It was pretty exciting, and I'll have to return here closer to December when they're really large. (Or maybe go back to Nazare, Portugal during the winter, where they have those "100 foot waves".)
