Now Leaving Clérigos - a photo on Flickriver

Porto was possibly my favorite city in Portugal. (I preferred my 4 day stay in Lagos after the whirlwind 6 day tour of the country because I was on my own, but the most picturesque city was Porto.)

I haven't posted anything from Oct. 2nd yet. The first part of the day was taken by a guided tour, and I spent the late afternoon and early evening with my travel mates Susan and Sandra. Some of my best photos from the trip are from this day, and it almost started with a disaster which would have driven me deep into depression.

First, I'll describe this area. It's the last tram stop of Porto's historic tram line #18. The tower is almost 250 feet tall, and contains 49 bells. It dominates one end of the church, which takes up a whole block.

From Wikipedia: "The church was built for the Brotherhood of the Clérigos (Clergy) by Nicolau Nasoni, an Italian architect and painter who left an extensive body of work in the north of Portugal during the 18th century.

Construction of the church began in 1732 and was finished in 1750, while the bell tower and the monumental divided stairway in front of the church were completed in 1763."

We had gelatos and drinks at a little cafe outside the tower while I waited for the tram. We opted not to climb the 240 steps to the top of the tower, although it was nearing sundown and the views are purported to be excellent. The tower is the tallest structure in Porto and can be seen all over town.

The disaster happened earlier in the day before the tour group was to board a boat to view the six bridges across the Douro river. While changing lenses, I hadn't slipped the camera's strap around my neck and dropped my camera. The electronics froze, then disappeared altogether. I thought it was a goner, but after taking the battery out and "rebooting" it, the electronics came back and it worked flawlessly again.
