Into The Ice Cave @ Vatnajokull, Iceland

Found this old image from archive. Not sure how I missed this one. But always a great feeling to find some good old images.

It has been a dream for long time to do some ice cave photography. So while in the trip of Iceland in 2016 winter, I did a lot of research on how exactly to get there. Off course I found those tourist traps where a bus full of people will get to an Ice Cave from Reykjavík. Well, very nice. Good luck. But not for me. That type of ice cave trip can be done within just few hours of driving from my place in several Swiss mountain tops in Zermatt and Jungfraujoch. So why would I go all the way to Iceland and what would I do special with 100s of tourists running around with their mobiles and keep flashing inside the dark ice cave!

So I thought I will do it alone and will find some place. I do have some mountaineering experience. I can use a crampon and an ice axe. Very nice, but then read a bit more reading really convinced me that it is extremely dangerous to just go into any ice cave. Firstly finding once is already a challenge. The drive close to that will be another one. Then inside the cave the chance of accident is pretty high. Specially if you attempt that alone.

With some more study I found a guide who does personalized photography trip in isolated ice caves. Ok, it was expensive. So I was a bit hesitant at the start. But they I saw that he is only free for one day in my whole trip length and rest are booked. So booking him didn't seem like a stupid idea.

It was worth was more than what I thought. And it would have been impossible for me to find that place alone. An experience of life time. I really wish that I was making video at that time as the journey into the ice cave itself was an experience to remember. Maybe next time. :)

We went bit more inside the Ice Cave to get this view. It was low, wet but not that cold as the moving water creates some heat to keep things a bit warmer and the caves are protected from the strong Icelandic wind.

I felt like achieving one of the goal of life being inside the Ice Cave. Definitely a special feeling of being there without any other tourists and able to have the time to enjoy photography.

Oh by the way; I have received the R5 this week and will test it during the weekend. I have already used the R6 for video work and it is exceptional. The RF glasses are absolutely stunning. Focus and stabilization are out of the world. The high ISO performance in video is also superb. So I will soon sell out my 5DSR and couple of EF lenses after doing a detailed comparison with R5. Easy decision.
However, tough choice is about my Nikon setup. The pure RAW images out of the Nikon is unbeatable. But the video from my D850 is disappointing. I can't carry both Canon and Nikon systems with me. However, the canon will not produce the same images when it comes to still as the D850. So I am completely confused now on what to do. Sell the Nikon setup off or hold onto that. The D850 is still under warranty means; I will get better price if I sell it now. Very tough decision to make!
