Red-tailed Hawk - a photo on Flickriver

Red-tailed Hawk

            I spotted a Red-tailed Hawk at the side of M-43 while on my way to Grand Rapids Michigan with my wife and step-son. Someone had already stopped. By the time I turned around, and stopped, the hawk was no longer standing but now was prone, breathing heavy. The other individual who stopped didn't hit the raptor but found him this way. He wondered if there was anything we could do and I told him I stopped to help contact a wildlife rehabilitator but it was obvious this bird was dying of internal injuries. He dragged him gently off the road. 
There were some opportunities to be had with this animal but we had to get to Grand Rapids, we were already late, and they would not want a dying hawk in the car. As a registered member of a federally recognized tribe, I have the right to the feathers but the law is murky. Finally I could easily have taken two day to do detailed studies of the bird. All things considered, I settled on some photos and left him there to die as peacefully as possible.
