Mare Island Naval Cemetery, CA graves of 15 men from the USS Boston

            There are many, many untold stories of the men interred within the white picket fence of the Mare Island Naval Cemetery. Here's one of them.

On June 13, 1892, sailors from the protected cruiser USS Boston were reworking and repacking shells that would be loaded back onto their ship. Something happened and the magazine exploded killing 12 of them immediately with many of them blown through the roof of the magazine. Three more were found hundreds of feet away on a beach on the island, skinned and charred but alive. They died within the day at the naval hospital. The following day 15 graves were dug and subsequently this memorial was erected by their shipmates.
