Mare Island Naval Cemetery, CA graves of Marines from the Battle of the Old Woman's Gun

            There are many, many untold stories of the men interred within the white picket fence at the Mare Island Naval Cemetery. 

Here's one of them.
The Mexican-American War or as it's known in Mexico the Intervención estadounidense en México, began in 1846 and ended in 1848. A series of battles were fought around the Pueblo de los Angeles in the fall of 1846. After the Siege of Los Angeles, the townspeople had buried guns and cannon. Clara Cota de Reyes had buried the old cannon from the Los Angeles Plaza and it was dug up and used in the Battle of the Old Woman's Gun on October 8th, 1846 where California troops and townspeople, successfully held off another attack on the Pueblo de los Angeles by some 300 United States Marines. The Marines were under the command of Navy Captain William Mervine from the USS Savannah, who was attempting to recapture the pueblo after the Siege of Los Angeles. Four Marines died in the battle (David Johnson, William Berry, Michael Hoy, and Charles Somers), and as Mervine retreated to the harbor in San Pedro, the Marines were buried on Deadman's Island in San Pedro Bay. The Marines laid at rest on the island until 1899 when they were disinterred due to the scheduled dynamiting and removal of the island to expand the Los Angeles harbor. The four Marines were reinterred 500 nautical miles to the north in the Mare Island Naval Cemetery in Northern California.
