Redistricting Michigan's voting map, 2nd visit to Grand Rapids

A session at 1 p.m. and another at 5 p.m. allowed for public comments limited to 90 seconds. In-person speakers were numbered and allowed to go first, then commenters using the online methods of input: telephone or Internet. Written remarks were collected on site, as well as the commissioners' website, michigan.gov/micrc

The first visit to Grand Rapids by the commissioners took place in early August. Now that 10 redistricting maps have been released in draft form, the commission has scheduled 5 locations around the state to take public comments. Each of the proposed redistricting maps is named after a tree to keep them separate. This afternoon in the first hour, at least, a few of the 24 initial speakers at the mics supported "pine," "cherry," and "apple." Each one had shortcomings that citizens pointed out, though.
