Captain Steinmetz

Miklós Steinmetz (1913-1944) was born in the city of Pécs (Hungary). His family lived in different countries (Yugoslavia, Italy, Argentina and Uruguay). He volunteered to be in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. He was an official of the Red Army and he was sent by Marshal Malinovsky to negotiate with the encircled Germans. He died shortly afterwards, probably in friendly fire.

After WW2 the Hungarian Communist Government accused the Germans of killing him.

His statue, created by Sándor Mikus (1949), marked the Eastern entrance of Budapest at the airport, near the site of his death. (The Western entrance was marked by the statue of captain Osztapenko.)

Both statues were removed after the fall of the Communism. Their story was taught in elementary schools to remind people of the perfidy of the Nazis and the sacrifice of the Soviets.

Many statues were removed after the fall of the Communism and the removal of some of them is questionable in my opinion. Fortunately none of them were destroyed; they are in the Memento Park in the outskirts of Budapest.
