Engraved Glass, Blaston - a photo on Flickriver

Blaston (pronounced 'Blayston') was never a large settlement but what there is of it is an attractive place with some handsome houses along its main street. Unusually it was split into two parishes with two separate churches, St Giles's on the western edge and St Michael's to the south east by the river. Today only St Giles's church remains in use, St Michael's having been ruinous for most of the last century, both churches having been much rebuilt and restored over the centuries.

St Giles church was rebuilt in its present form in 1878 and is a simple building consisting of nave and apsidal chancel with only a small bellcote piercing the skyline above roof level at the west end. The fittings and glass largely date from the late Victorian period although the pews were removed in more recent years and replaced by chairs, which gives the interior a greater sense of space and flexibility. There is some attractive glass in the three windows of the apse, while at the west end are some more intriguing pieces incorporated into the gallery, including two heraldic panels reputed to have come originally from the old House of Lords. Their provenance is rather murky but their form and style are consistent enough to suggest this is possible.
