One of the eight 15th century carved misericords in the chancel (I missed three of them on the north side as a result of trying to be quick and keeping out of the way while others were using the sanctuary area).

This was my second visit to Norton church, my first being more than three decades earlier, but even then I remembered a few choice features here. It is amazing though how unfamiliar a place can feel even though you've been before, as I 'd seemed to have completely forgotten the approach to this place, up a quiet lane and along a fine avenue of trees up through the churchyard.

As I parked the bike in the porch I heard voices inside so realised I wouldn't be alone, and having felt a bit of a rough throat and a cough coming on that morning felt a bit self conscious so had a sweet to clear things up before speaking to anyone. At the point I felt a sickly crunch in my mouth, as one of my newly crowned teeth broke away. Thus I shall never forget standing in that porch at Norton!

I entered (one tooth down) and found the vicar was instructing another lady at the altar so I would have to be more selective with my photography here, but they were both very pleasant and didn't mind me looking around and snapping away (I name-dropped my aunt again and of course they knew her here too, another church she plays the organ for!).

St Andrew's at Norton is an unpretentious building, not as grand as many but handsome enough. What is more interesting here are some of the features within, a very fine font and some good medieval woodwork in the chancel, especially a collection of misericords which are such an unusual feature of a parish church (where did they come from originally?). There are fragments of medieval glass in the traceries of a couple of the windows here too, and a delightful censing angel (formerly the other way up in the east window) in a south chancel window which along with the misericords was the feature I remembered best from my last visit in the mid 1980s. There are also several medieval benches surviving in the nave and aisles, though their condition doesn't alas match the better known examples in several churches nearby.

St Andrew's is normally open and welcoming to visitors and has much of interest, well worth exploring.
