            The Battenkill Railroad's leased Alco RS36 SNEX 5012 returns through Cambridge with empties from the NS interchange at Eagle Bridge, NY. The Battenkill can be seen traveling down the former D&H Washington Branch an average of about once a week, occasionally with the 5012 in charge as historically appropriate for the location. The story I heard is that the unit is leased from Southern New England Rail as a result of an increase in traffic occasionally requiring a second unit to pull the heavy loads up the branch to the mills, and with one of the RS3s out of service an alternate solution was found. The entire northbound run back towards Salem is generally backlit, so the already excellent weather conditions with storm clouds in the background and bright sky behind me proved even more rewarding.
