Heimaey - a photo on Flickriver

Heimaey

            This is the town of Vestmannaeyjar with a population over 4.000. It's located on the island Heimaey and, if I'm not mistaken, is home to the world's largest puffin colony which makes this place a popular tourist stop during the summer. Geology geeks will also have a blast here as this island is also home to the active volcano Eldfell which last erupted in 1973 burying many homes under a thick layer of ash and some went under the lava itself. Everyone on the island was temporarily relocated to the mainland during this event and when they returned, a new 200m tall mountain had appeared that wasn't there just a couple of months ago.
