            La processione delle Barette ("Varetti" in siciliano) è di origine spagnola e iniziò verso il XV secolo, quando nei giorni precedenti la Pasqua venivano portate a spalla per le strade l'immagine della Madonna Addolorata e un simulacro di bara con il Cristo morto, seguito da altre piccole bare, da cui il nome dell'evento. Nel 1610 la Confraternita dei Bianchi istituì una processione di statue rievocative della Passione di Cristo, da tenersi nella notte del Giovedì Santo. Dal 1801 la processione si svolge il Venerdì Santo.
I gruppi statuari sono 11, dei quali solo la Flagellazione (o "Cristo alla colonna") e l'Ecce Homo sono originari, risalenti al XVII sec.; gli altri furono ricostruiti dopo le distruzioni causate dal terremoto del 1908 oppure aggiunti negli anni '50. Tutti vengono custoditi all'interno della chiesa del Nuovo Oratorio della Pace, sita in via XXIV Maggio. Dal 1994 la Confraternita Santissimo Crocifisso il Ritrovato ha il compito di organizzare la processione.

The procession of the Barette ("Varetti" in Sicilian, literally "small coffins") has Spanish origins and started towards the 15th century, when, in the days preceeding Easter, an image of Our Lady of Sorrows and a coffin containing the body of dead Christ were carried around on foot around the city streets, followed by other small coffins - hence the name of the event. In 1610 the Confraternita dei Bianchi (Confraternity of the Whites) established a procession of statues evoking the Passion of Christ, to be held the night of Maundy Thursday. Since 1801 the procession has been held on Good Friday.
The statuary groups are 11, but only two of them - the Flagellation (or "Christ by the column") and the Ecce Homo are originary, dating back to the 17th century; the others were either rebuilt after the destruction caused by the 1908 earthquake or added in the 1950s. All of them are kept inside the church of Nuovo Oratorio della Pace (New Oratory of Peace), found in via XXIV Maggio. Since 1994 the task of organizing the procession has been assigned to the Confraternita Santissimo Crocifisso il Ritrovato (Confraternity of the Most Holy Recovered Crucifix).
