Namaqua Chameleon

            The first area we visited in Namibia was Swakopmund, an old German colonial town, on the west coast next to the Atlantic Ocean. About a 4hr drive from the capital, Windhoek, it was here we got our first experience of the Namib Desert.

The oldest desert in the world, the Namib, stretches from South Africa, through Namibia and up to Angola. On our first day we managed to see quite a few of the smaller species of Namibia, including the Namaqua Chameleon, Peringuey's Adder (Sidewinder) and Palmato Gecko. Driving the sand dunes of the desert was something else!

In the afternoon we headed out to 'Pelican Point' where we didn't see any Pelicans, but did come across large colonies of Cape Fur Seals and Greater Flamingos. Not a bad start! More images to follow...
