Shelter in the Storm in the Grand Canyon with legendary photographer David Zickle

We had no idea we would be pummelled with pea-sized hail in May in Arizona. The weather started out mostly wet and cold. We jokingly called it Mayuary - January in May. Shortly after leaving Redwall Cavern the hail hit. We were lucky to be near Whale's Overhang (RM 35.5) so our Trip Leader Jay Healy guided us in to the only available shelter. We chocked in and cammed in held on and rode out the storm. Whale (Curtis Hansen) was a legendary boatman on the River and his legacy lives on in the Whale Foundation and Whale's Overhang.

At 0530 in the morning you have to look at a small sliver of sky and guess whether the weather is going to be hot and sunny or cold and wet. If you guess wrong, you really can't adjust until noon when you can get into your daybag and change layers. I guessed wet and cold today but I had no idea we would have pea sized hail in May.

David Zickle is a legendary photographer for Arizona Highways and a gourmet chef. He was an assistant on the trip so that he could get some photos of our guides going through the rapids for a special project he is working on. He has a multi thousand dollar camera with an incredible waterproof shield and more carabiners and protection than you can imagine. He might end up in the rapids but his camera won't. His specialty is portraiture.
