Nice, capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera, is located on the stony shores of Baie des Anges. The city, which was founded by the Greeks and later a retreat for the European elite of the 19th century, has long attracted artists as well. The former resident, Henri Matisse, is commemorated with a collection of paintings from his entire career at the Matisse Museum. The Marc Chagall Museum includes some of the main works of religious inspiration by the artist that gives rise to his name.
