En période nuptiale le bec du mâle devient vert et bleu-turquoise et la pointe devient noire et les plumes s'allongent sur la nuque.
C'est particulièrement visible sur cette photo prise dans la roselière.

In the breeding season the male's beak turns green and turquoise-blue and the tip turns black, the legs turn red and the feathers grow longer on the neck.
