RT1894 (LLU802)

            This service was first introduced as route 207 between New Barnet Station and Chesterfield Road in Barnet Vale with Potters Bar's drivers at the wheel. Originally with STLs, these were soon replace with RTs fitted with those awkward-looking semaphore indicator arms to negate so many hand signals as their drivers fought with the steering wheel and gearbox simultaneously as they wrestled their steeds around several tight corners and steep hills.

In June 1961 the 207 was reborn as the 261 and extended to Arnos Grove, Palmers Green taking complete control until withdrawal just over nineteen years later.

One wonders how many cyclists suddenly sighted one of those semaphore arms suddenly pop up right in front of his or her face at the last second? Sounds amusing enough to be a Monty Python sketch but not so funny for the cyclist!

RT1894 as AD 3 on route 261 performs a valiant service as it puffs & wheezes towards the crest of Meadway at the approach to Barnet High Street. Then the bus would risk a coronary attempting a right hand turn followed by yet more uphill to Barnet Church. Only then was it a downhill breeze all the way to Chesterfield Road. Then it would need to come back, several times, on this short route.
