Gymnostoma sumatranum (Jungh. ex de Vriese) L.A.S.Johnson. Casuarinaceae. CN: [Malay and regional vernacular names - Rhu bukit, Cemara sumatra, Ru Sumatra, Ru ronang, Maribuhok, Son-pattawia], Sumatran ru. Native to the Malesia floristic zone - Indonesia (Celebes, Irian Jaya, Kalimantan, Moluccas, Sumatra), Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak); elsewhere cultivated. Monoecious tree growing up to ca. 5-10 m height; a drooping equisetoid (meaning "to look like Equisetum") needle-like twigs, are evergreen. Fruit a compound cone-like structure, 2—3 cm in diameter. The roots have nitrogen-fixing nodules that contain the soil actinomycete Frankia.
