66740 6S45 over Rannoch viaduct 20th july 2021

            66740 pulls out of Rannoch station and its driver puts on the power as it hits the 1 in 53 gradient over the viaduct, up beyond through a series of S bends and up through the snow shed, ever upwards to Corrour, another eight miles. The flanges of the four wheelers squeal as they enter the hill avoiding bend of the viaduct. The train is 6S45, from the North Blyth aluminia loader to the Corpach smelter at Fort William. For a short while this train commands all attention, but as sure as the summer will bring rain the trains presence, while in view for around fifteen minutes, will soon pass. For all this shortness of time in the space of the day, in the space of the wait here, it leaves a lasting impression on those who saw it. But then, the reality is they saw it on the vast moor. And the moor generates in us a magnification of the senses, a sense of great awe and this it imprints within our memories.
