female smokey winged weevil wasp (Cerceris fumipennis)

            The smokey winged weevil wasp (aka beetle bandit) is a ground nesting wasp that is widespread in eastern and central North America. They feed on brupestid beetles (jewel or metallic wood-boring beetles, including the emerald ash borer) which the seize and paralyze with their stinger. These are returned to the nest, where the female lays an egg along the sternum of the paralyzed beetle that the larvae will feed on when hatched. As emerald ash borers are difficult to detect, surveillance is quite difficult. However, by monitoring populations of C. fumipennis, are being used as part of a broader biosurveillance effort.
