What We Leave Behind - a photo on Flickriver

This image of Albert Bridge at sunrise was one I was very eager to capture, but it required several visits to the location and a lot of luck.

I was drawn to the scene because of the strong contrast between the gritty texture in Chelsea Embankment’s granite walls and the smooth surface of the Thames after a long-exposure capture, but getting the details exactly right proved a challenge. My first attempt, on a calm and overcast morning, produced a near-perfect reflection of the bridge in the river, but also featured an obscured sun. On another occasion I was thwarted by a choppy and rapidly rising tide which nearly submerged my tripod and camera (and me) while the camera’s shutter was open and exposing.

The final result is close to the way I’d imagined the scene, with a hazy Battersea Power Station and St George Wharf Tower in the distance, an opaque Thames reflecting the early-morning light, and the sun making its way above the trees and casting a warm glow along Chelsea Embankment as its railings vanish into the tide.
