Crossing the Pit, 1942

            During the Second World War, Allied convoys en route to the United Kingdom faced constant threat from German U-Boote (submarines), particularly in the area of the Atlantic Ocean known as the Mid-Atlantic Gap or “The Black Pit,” which lay beyond the range of air protection. The responsibility to guard the thirty-something vessels in the convoy, then, fell upon the handful of escorting destroyers and corvettes. Aboard the ships, lookouts held an especially vital role, maintaining a constant watch for the periscope of a submarine poking through the water or, even worse, the wake of a torpedo hurtling towards a ship. Once the enemy was spotted, escort captains had at their disposal various types of artillery and depth charges, but their counterparts on the convoy ships had only a few defensive guns at best, along with flares to signal impending danger. When the convoy finally reached the range of Allied air cover, anti-submarine aircraft—such as PBY Catalinas, operated by the Royal Air Force—could locate and destroy enemy submarines from above.
