BB62 New Jersey and BB60 Alabama - a photo on Flickriver

            A study in contrasts of two WWII battleships: the USS Alabama (top) was launched on Feb 16, 1942, while the USS New Jersey was launched only 10 months later on Dec 7, 1942. Though primary and secondary armaments were the same for both ships (9-16" and 20- 5") the Alabama  @ 680 ft was over 220 ft shorter than the 887 ft New Jersey. The former, a Dakota class BB of 45,233 tons (full load) designed under the restrictions of the Second London Naval Treaty of 1936, was a study in compactness and mechanical efficiency, in deference to Treaty constraints. She provided a suitably wide 108 ft  platform for her main guns, but had a mean accommodation for crew.  The 1938 designed Iowa class New Jersey, at 59,065 tons (full load) was built with no pretensions of treaty compliance, was much more commodious, and was by far the better AA gun platform, with 80- 40mm and 49- 20mm tertiary armament, out-gunning the Alabama, with 24- 40mm and 35- 20mm. Obvious is the New Jersey's greater deck space on which to mount so many more guns.
