Smooth-handed Ghost crab (Ocypode cordimanus)

            In Sydney, ghost crabs are very abundant even at beaches inside the city, if these are not too often disturbed (cleaned). Whereas they are rare or absent in Bondi, Bronte and Coogee beaches (probably due to the massive human-caused disturbance that these beaches are exposed to every day by tourists), these crabs are fairly common at the calmer, smaller beaches in Vaucluse. Some of said beaches are only a few meters long and broad, so that crabs started to dig burrows in the adjacent pasture or hide in crevices of stones piled up for gardening purposes. They seem to get along pretty well although locals wander the promenades at all times and most of the beaches are illuminated throughout the night.
