Successful Pupation! - a photo on Flickriver

            We are so excited! We have attempted to rear six Monarch Caterpillars in the past several weeks. The first large one, found on our Butterfly Weed, we covered with netting and decided to let it on the plant. The next day it was gone :-( Shortly after, I found two more, a really tiny one and a middle-sized one in my back yard on Swamp Milkweed that was heavily infested with aphids. I brought those indoors and collected more Swamp Milkweed from our local park. The both were feeding well, but one day the middle-sized one stopped feeding and just hung itself from a leaf. It began to ooze white fluid (I posted the pictures) and eventually three small, white grubs/maggots fell out of the caterpillar's body. Needless to say, the caterpillar perished from being parasitized by a Tachinid Fly! The remaining caterpillar grew and then on July 20th it formed the "J" and pupated! Coincidentally, the Swamp Milkweed that I had collected from the park, had two Monarch eggs on the flowers, which I never saw until I noticed two more caterpillars and I found another large one in my garden. That one has also pupated (today) and I suspect another one will shortly. If the pupas mature successfully (9-14 days), I will have become a butterfly momma! I assisted one Monarch Caterpillar in 2013. It has been quite a bit of work, but so worth it!
